Arcade Fire's victory saw them triumph in a category where most had put them last behind ever-provocative Lady Gaga, top nominee Eminem, bubblegum pop tart Katy Perry, and Lady Antebellum. “We're going to go play another song because we like music,” lead singer Win Butler said excitedly after Barbra Streisand announced their shock victory. Just as surprising was the victory of jazz musician and singer Esperanza Spalding for Best New Artist where she beat the hot favorite teen sensation Justin Bieber.
Other multiple winners included Lady Gaga, Jay-Z, Dr Dre, John Legend, with three awards each, while Eminem, who had a leading ten nominations coming into the show, won just two. The Muse won best rock album for The Resistance.Other winners included Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Jeff Beck and Black Keys, and Neil Young, who picked up the first musical Grammy of his career for the best rock song for Angry World. Unsurprisingly the most talked-about early moment was provided by Lady Gaga who arrived at the awards ensconced in a giant egg from which she emerged to sing her new single Born This Way.
Other notable performances came from Barbra Streisand, Justin Bieber and Jaden Smith, Mick Jagger, Bob Dylan, and Eminem and Rihanna performing their hit Love the Way You Lie. Cee-Lo's collaboration with Gwyneth Paltrow and a selection of the Muppets will also be remembered as high points of the evening.
